Advice for managing diabetes

Three tips for managing diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition in which glucose or sugar levels build up in the bloodstream because the body does not make enough insulin. Insulin is responsible for moving sugar into cells, where it is used for energy. Type 2 diabetes typically develops slowly and initially has only mild symptoms. As time goes on, the damage from uncontrolled diabetes is significant and includes blindness, loss of limbs, nerve damage and more.

Fortunately, if you have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, there is a lot that you can do to improve your health and reduce the likelihood of complications. While it is well known that a healthy diet and physical activity can improve diabetes symptoms, there are some things that can help that you might not be aware of. Dr.Trang Nguyen, Conroe family physician, offers some tips to help you better manage your diabetes.

1.) Talk to Your Physician

Individualized care is important when it comes to managing diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. Research supports treatment based on individual needs rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Therefore, the first step in diabetes management is to discuss your symptoms and treatment options with your doctor. Your physician can give you tips and suggest lifestyle changes that are individualized to help you manage your diabetes. They can also refer you to a certified diabetes educator, a health professional who possess specialized knowledge in diabetes management.

2.) Stay Hydrated

Dehydration significantly interferes with blood sugar levels. Therefore, it is important to get a glass of water to drink whenever you can. Most of the time, your body will alert you when you are dehydrated. But, that is not the case for the elderly. Elderly people with diabetes may not be aware that they are thirsty. This, combined with other risk factors for dehydration, such as taking diuretics, can result in significant dehydration in older people. If you are a senior or the caregiver of older people with diabetes and notice fluctuating blood sugar levels, it is important to talk to your doctor about dehydration.

3.) Treat Sleep Apnea

Many people that have type 2 diabetes also have sleep apnea. This is a condition in which a person temporarily stops breathing while sleeping. People diagnosed with sleep apnea and diabetes often have blood sugar levels that fluctuate more dramatically while sleeping than in those without sleep apnea. Loud snoring is a sign of sleep apnea, therefore, if you snore talk to your doctor about the need to have a sleep test to diagnose sleep apnea.

How does SculpSure™work?
•SculpSure™ works by heating up the fat cells above a threshold temperature to which they are no longer viable. The body then clears away the damaged fat cells on its own.
•SculpSure™ utilizes cooling plates to keep the skin cool and comfortable while the heat is concentrated and delivered right into the fat.
•SculpSure™ requires no downtime and no need for any anesthesia.

What are the advantages of SculpSure™
•First of it’s kind! Safe, AWAKE, Comfortable, Fast!
•Completely non-invasive
•FDA Approved Technology
•Attacks fat cell integrity & structure
•No damage to surrounding tissue
•No bruising, numbness or nerve pain after session
•Versatile applicators allow for treating many areas.
•Thermal spread creates treatment areas slightly larger than applicator size, & also helps blend treatment to adjacent areas
•Results within 6 weeks to 12 weeks
•Cost effective

HOW LONG BEFORE I CAN RESUME NORMAL ACTIVITIES?
There is no downtime with SculpSure™, so you can have the treatment during your lunch hour and return to work immediately.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FAT LOSS AND WEIGHT LOSS?
The number of fat cells stored in our bodies typically remain constant throughout adult life. After the SculpSure™ treatment, the destroyed fat cells will never return. However, as we lose weight, the size of fat cells become smaller, but typically do not decrease in number. Even with diet and exercise, many people have difficulty losing weight in these trouble areas.

Is SculpSure right for me?
SculpSure is ideal for people with trouble spots, particularly those that seem resistant to diet and exercise.

How many treatments will I need?
Every patient is different. Your treatment provider will develop a customized treatment plan to meet your desired goals. Ask your treatment provider about the treatment plan that is right for you.

What should I expect during the treatment?
Most patients feel a tingling sensation intermittently throughout the treatment which is generally well-tolerated.

When will I see results?
You may start to see results as early as 6 weeks following treatment as your body begins to evacuate the treated fat cells, with optimal results usually seen at 12 weeks.

How long will results last?
Your fat cells should be reduced during and after the treatment and should not regenerate.

Laser Hair Removal

Real Self, which is a health guide review website, says that over 90% of the people who undergo laser hair removal procedures are satisfied with the results. The improvement in the technology and accuracy of laser hair removal equipment, achieved over the past decades, has been outstanding.

For those living in Conroe, TX and the surrounding areas, laser hair removal is a practiced skill of Dr. Trang Nguyen of Conroe Family Doctor. Dr. Nguyen is a well-liked Conroe family physician in the community. Dr. Nguyen has a nice talent for laser hair removal procedures. To do the procedures well is a skill that involves a bit of artistry combined with science.

Laser hair removal is suitable for both females and males. With laser hair removal, it is possible to achieve a smooth hairless skin and/or have beautifully trimmed areas with perfect lines, such as eyebrows, mustaches, sideburns, or beards.

With some patients, the hair removal process is permanent or semi-permanent. For others, if the hair comes back it does not grow back for a very long time (several months up to a year) and when it comes back it is thinner and a lighter color. Laser hair removal is preferable to tweezing, shaving, and waxing. There is no mess and much less pain associated with the laser procedure.

Although, maintenance treatments may be necessary to remove any hair that grows backing the future, on the plus side, the more laser hair removal treatments there are, the less likely it is for any hair to return.

How does laser hair removal work?

The laser is an intense light, which accurately focuses on a specific spot about the size of a quarter. The laser light goes through the upper layers of the skin to create heat at the focal point of the light, which is the base of the hair, called the “follicle.”

The laser heat destroys the follicles. A hair is similar to a plant or tree. Without the follicle roots, the hair cannot grow. The doctor performing the laser hair removal procedure moves the focal point of the laser carefully and meticulously to destroy the hair follicles in one small area at a time.

It is detailed work to remove the hair from an area, which takes some dedicated care. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that patients should expect 10% to 25% of the hair removed on the first treatment. To complete the process, depending on the size of the area for hair removal, usually takes two to six visits. This requires a bit of patience; however, the rewards of the procedure are spectacular.

Laser Hair Removal Benefits

The laser hair removal procedure is fast, pain-free, accurate, and the results are predictable. Because of this, it is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in America.

Before and After Treatment

To prepare for laser hair removal requires a period of six weeks with limited use of other hair removal techniques during that period, such as waxing, plucking, or electrolysis.

Potential Side Effects

Side effects are usually not a problem. If they do occur, they are very mild. There may be a slight redness to the skin or a simple rash that develops after the procedure. This goes away in a short time. To reduce the chance of any potential adverse side effects, the recommendation is to avoid sun exposure for the six weeks before the procedure and six weeks after the procedure. This is why it is popular to have the procedure done during fall or winter.

If you are considering laser hair removal, make an appointment with Dr. Trang Nguyen of Conroe Family Doctor to discuss the procedure. You will be very happy with your new hairless look.
